July Garden Diary

July has been all about picking the fruits of my labour and enjoying recipes with my veg patch ingredients as the hero. But don’t forget that July is also a time to get ready for harvesting later in the year.

I find July is a great month to sow a variety of herbs and veg for enjoying in the Autumn months. Spring Cabbage, turnips and a variety of salads. I also plant carrots and broccoli. You’ll be so happy when you know you’re all set for the months ahead.

July is also the perfect month to plant your leeks for a winter supply. Get those last Veg in. You won’t regret it.

In the garden I’m cutting back all the herbs and veg that have gone to seed (overgrown wastage). Mainly parsley, chard and lovage.

I’m also loving harvesting the first of my Chioggia beetroot (pink blush variety) and I’m busy pickling it. The colour is quite simply amazing.

‘Elton’ my prize artichoke will this week need some TLC and I’ll have to cut him back a little. He has been like a glorious sculpture in the garden. Beautiful to look at and to eat. I’m hoping this prune will bring him back to his full glory!

I’m also cutting back ‘Bella’ the broad bean. (Please tell me you name your veg too!) She’s looking a bit droopy and the beans are nearly all gone.

And, of course, weeding will be taking up most of my time, with the rain and heat the weeds have been partying!
