Get Your Bulb Game On
We planted our bulbs last autumn and to see their glorious colours explode around the garden was like a ray of sunshine. One of my favourite things about planting bulbs is that you have to wait weeks and months before you get to see the results making it all the more worth it when they bloom. Bulbs are some of the easiest plants to grow so even with very basic gardening knowledge or prowess you can still grow beautiful flowers - all you need is some well-drained soil and some sunshine.
The best time to plant your bulbs is from October to December before it starts to get frosty so now really is the perfect time to get started. It’s important to plant the bulbs with their tops facing upwards and generally I would plant them in three times their own depth and with the width of two bulbs around them to give them plenty of space to flourish. The most common mistake that people make when planting bulbs is not giving them enough room to grow. Always replace the soil after planting so that they are no air pockets around the bulbs, and they are nice and snug. Make sure you break down any large clumps of soil with your hands and be careful not to tread over them as this will damage the bulbs. If the soil is moist or the bulbs are planted in Autumn/Winter then watering every day is not essential because it’s bound to rain over the coming months.
There are so many gorgeous flowers to choose from but the most common bulbs are daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops, tulips, crocuses and alliums. Here I am pictured with some of my favourite varieties that we planted last summer:
Hawera – Triandrus Narcissi
Cheerfulness – Tazetta Narcissi
Verona – Tulip
La Belle Epoque – Tulip
Apricot Beauty – Tulip
Princess Zaide – White Daffodil
