Forcing Rhubarb
I was sitting at my desk reading my gardening diary from last year to see what needs to be done in the garden this January and this time last year I was covering up the rhubarb. I was so excited to read this as there is not much to do in the garden at the moment. So, I jumped up, grabbed my gardening gloves and off I went to the vegetable beds!
If you’re growing rhubarb this is the perfect time to clear up any leaves and rubble that may be around your plants, and cover the crowns with cloches to blacken out any light and add warmth. Cloches are great as they have a little lid and this means that if you want to have a peek and see how well your rhubarb is growing, you don’t need to lift a heavy terracotta pot up.
I bought the cloches from a local garden centre a couple of years ago. If you don’t have cloches, you can alway use a large upturned pot or a large garden basket.
You can expect gorgeous rhubarb stalks to be ready to harvest in around 8 weeks.
