Top 10 Tips On Keeping Hens
How To Set Your Chicken House
Collect the eggs every morning to avoid egg eating and broodiness
Make sure the hens have lots of clean water, they drink more than you would imagine!
Clean the house out every day
Bed the roosting area with fresh clean dry hay everyday so that they have a comfy warm spot to roost
Ensure adequate ventilation in the house to prevent respiratory diseases and suffocation. More chickens die from poorly ventilated houses than from draughts (which they also do not like) but poor ventilation leads to condensation and mould spores, especially in plastic-type henhouses. I invested in a wooden house with vents.
Make sure all the hens are in their house and locked up by the time it is dark, this will help protect them from any foxes lurking around
If you can let them roam around freely as much as possible. Mine have an area that I have fenced in around the house but I also let them roam around the rest of the gardens for about an hour before bedtime
Worm the hens regularly either with Flubenvet twice a year or, a herbal remedy like Verm-X or Net-Tex Gut Conditioner once a month
Place their used leftover hay in your compost bin, it will be full of richness for your soil
Take the time to get to know your hens, they are full of character and will bring so much happiness to your home
