Thinking Of Planting An Orchard Or A Tree?
There is something very special about planting a tree, the fact that it will be here long after we have gone, the good you are doing for the environment and the life that you are adding to your garden. And did you know they remove pollution from the air? In October 2019 we drew up the plans for our orchard, we wanted to create an orchard with interesting and different varieties of fruit trees that would be enjoyed for years and years ahead. In November 2019 we planted out 29 fruit trees.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE?
Autumn is the most ideal time to plant a tree, anytime from late September to the end of November.
WHY IS AUTUMN THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE?
There’s less chance of drought or sun scorch harming fragile, newly-planted trees. Plus, the cooler temperatures help encourage new root growth. And this effect is compounded. Since trees focus on growing new roots in fall, planting new trees now helps them develop more, stronger roots.
WHAT VARIETY OF FRUIT TREES DID WE PLANT?
We have apple, pear, cherry, mulberry, medlar, apricot, damson and plum! So excited to see this orchard flourish and yield delicious fruits.
CARE FOR YOUR NEWLY PLANTED TREE?
Proper watering is essential to bringing moisture and oxygen to your trees. During the first two weeks, water the young trees every day. Then, water a new tree once a week for the first year, while it still has its leaves. Be sure to take rainfall into account before watering, too.
SHOULD YOU STAKE YOUR TREE?
Staking trees that don’t need it can cause the tree to grow fewer roots and develop a weak tree base. Only stake your tree if it needs extra support, protection or help staying anchored. We staked our trees as they are in a windy spot and the fruit trees are top heavy, but we will be removing the stakes in the next few weeks (1 year on) otherwise they will become too dependent on the stakes.
